Faculty present at Maine public health conference

MDFMR faculty Kelley Harmon DO and Alane O’Connor DNP delivered a presentation on the integrated care of opioid dependent women and their infants at the Maine Public Health Association’s annual conference on Oct 16, 2018, which focused on addiction and the state of public health in Maine. They discussed evidence based screening for substance use during pregnancy, options for medication assisted treatment, and barriers to treatment that pregnant women with substance use disorders commonly encounter. The presentation concluded with a description of the successful group visit model offered at both the Family Medicine Institute and Maine Dartmouth Family Practice.

In addition to sharing their clinical work externally as a model of best practice, both faculty members are conducting research on different aspects of opioid dependency during pregnancy in an effort to improve treatment and outcomes for women and their infants.
