Experiencing firsthand the challenges and rewards of caring for older adults sparked Dr. Carlen Smith’s interest in pursuing advanced training in geriatric medicine. Carlen earned a bachelor of science in biomedical sciences from Western Michigan University and completed medical training at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI. During medical school she volunteered at free medical clinics and the community food bank, and was the co-director of grants for the student-run free clinic. She chose to train in family medicine and served as co-chief resident in her final year of residency at the University of Vermont Medical Center. Carlen considers herself a film enthusiast and in her spare time enjoys hiking, travel, and crafts.
