Inpatient Experience

The inpatient experience takes place at two clinical sites, MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Alfond Center for Health in Augusta, and Maine Medical Center in Portland. At both sites, ONMM residents provide inpatient consultation services in all medical departments under the supervision of NMM/OMM faculty and attendings. ONMM residents learn how to treat a variety of common clinical conditions such as respiratory exacerbations with COPD, asthma, fluid stasis disorders, and acute pain.

Alfond Center for Health – Augusta

Since its inception, our inpatient osteopathic neuromusculoskeletal medicine consultative service has been steadily expanding; we routinely receive referrals from:

  • general medicine
  • the acute rehabilitation service
  • postoperative care
  • obstetrics
  • pediatrics
  • behavioral health

We also work closely with pediatric hospitalists and the obstetrical team to help manage peripartum and postpartum obstetrical pain conditions and feeding difficulties in newborns; care is frequently coordinated between the inpatient and ambulatory settings, from initial treatment in our outpatient specialty referral clinic (Maine Dartmouth Collaborative Care Center) through the postpartum hospital stay and following up in the outpatient specialty referral clinic.

Our hospital community is gaining a deeper appreciation for the value of osteopathic manipulative therapeutics as an adjunct to inpatient medical care, so we are actively working to expand opportunities for training in this model.

Maine Medical Center – Portland

We also have an enduring relationship with inpatient clinicians at the Maine Medical Center in Portland Maine. Maine Medical Center is the largest tertiary care hospital in Maine. Here the acuity of conditions experienced within the inpatient consultation service is higher and the diversity of pathology is greater, lending breadth to ONMM resident education in this domain.
