Kari Koch, MD

Medical School: Latin American School of Medicine
Family Medicine Residency: Mountain Area Health Education Center- Hendersonville

Kari loves family medicine and embraces the full-scope nature of the FM specialty. She followed a somewhat rambling course to the field of healthcare: after growing up in a small town in New Hampshire she went to college at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. Afterwards she lived in Colorado and then Boston, where she learned about the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana, Cuba, a scholarship program offered by the Cuban government to students interested in studying medicine with a commitment to care of the underserved. She jumped at the chance, and subsequently lived in Cuba for 6.5 formative years. She is incredibly grateful to the Cuban people for all their generosity and education.

During her rural residency at MAHEC in Hendersonville, NC, Kari focused on developing the skills to be a full-scope family physician. She developed passions for critical care, hospital medicine and procedures, and mom-baby care. She is excited about working as a faculty hospitalist with MDFMR, particularly because of its devotion to full-spectrum family medicine.

While in Cuba, Kari met her amazing husband, Diego. A transfer from Patagonia, Argentina, Diego is happy to return to a cold weather climate. They have two beautiful children whom they adore. Kari is passionate about her family, her friends, reading, gardening, and soccer.
