24th Annual Nevola Symposium on Spirituality and Health

Population studies suggest that most people in the United States will have some exposure to trauma during their lives . . . accidents, untimely deaths, betrayal, abuse or other such unanticipated, intense emotional events that potentially challenge their personal integrity and feelings of safety and trust. As many as one in 15 Americans is diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, while many others find their way through intense emotional experiences toward what a growing body of scientific literature calls "post-traumatic growth."

What makes the difference? How can we, as professionals, friends and neighbors, best support people in the wake of trauma? How are spiritual values and practices meaningful in trauma healing and resilience?

The 2010 Nevola Symposium offers a vibrant assortment of evidence-based and experiential approaches to helping people in the wake of traumatic life experiences. Our keynote presenter draws upon years of experience in offering approaches that cultivate hope and empowerment in severely traumatized communities of people around the world. Several supporting workshops will explore other approaches to trauma healing in a variety of clinical and community settings. We hope you come away with some personal refreshment, good networking experiences and creative ideas/skills to apply in your work or community.

Dedication

As always, this symposium honors the memory of Thomas Nevola, MD, an energetic and devoted young physician whose personal and professional passion for spirituality and health care was — and continues to be — inspirational.
