Alane O’Connor, DNP, publishes ground breaking research on gender roles in NAS.
MDFMR’s Dr. O’Connor is lead author of “Are there gender related differences in neonatal abstinence syndrome following exposure to buprenorphine during pregnancy?” which is online in print, ahead of publication in the Journal of Perinatal Medicine. Dr. O’Connor notes “The variables that contribute to the expression of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) following exposure to buprenorphine during pregnancy are not well understood. We are the first to report that infant gender may play an important role. Specifically, when compared to female infants, male infants experience a more severe NAS and are more likely to require pharmacologic treatment.”

MDFMR’s Clinical Director at MQC Conference
MDFMR’s Director of Clinical Medicine Stephanie Calkins, MD, is featured in Maine Quality Counts Conference. video Achieving the Triple Aim in Maine, which premiered at MQC’s 10th annual conference. She also presentated a workshop on the Transformation at the Practice Level - Enhancing the skills and role of a Medical Assistant on the health care team. Dr. Calkins’ practice, Four Seasons Family Practice, is one of the leading practices in Maine’s Patient Centered Medical Home Pilot Program.
