Fellowships
Maine-Dartmouth is presently home to a fully accredited Geriatric Fellowship. We are also in the process of developing fellowships in Palliative Care, Neuromuscular Medicine and Sports Medicine. Please contact us if you are interested in more information.
Geriatric Fellowship
When Maine-Dartmouth FMR became a fully accredited ACGME Geriatric Fellowship Training Program in June, 2004, it was the first geriatric training program in northern New England. It is a one-year training program with two fellows in training each year, one assigned for outpatient practice in Augusta and the other in Fairfield. Physicians who have completed a residency in family practice or internal medicine are eligible to enter the program.
Our goal is to develop a cadre of physicians with advanced skills in clinical geriatrics, leadership and expert geriatric consultation who will provide care in Maine and other underserved areas. The curriculum is primarily longitudinal with activities devoted to interdisciplinary geriatric team assessments, home visits, nursing home and hospital rounds, and outpatient practice. Karen Gershman is the fellowship director. She holds a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Geriatrics along with Daniel Onion and Cheryl Seymour. Other faculty include a geropsychiatrist, neurologist, geriatric nurse, social work specialists and a medical sociologist. Fellows who complete the program are eligible to sit for the CAQ in Geriatrics and the nursing home Medical Director’s examinations.
