Russell DeJong, MD

Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons
Internship, Los Angeles County Hospital
Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Washington Hospital, Seattle

Russell DeJong, MD Russ is a practicing obstetrician/gynecologist who brings to the residency a wide range of interests, skills, and experiences. He received his medical training at Columbia University in New York City and his internship and residency at Los Angeles County Hospital and the University of Washington in Seattle. Prior to joining the residency, Russ was the Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Harborview Medical Center, the county hospital for Seattle's King County, and was a faculty member at the University of Washington. His areas of interests include high risk obstetrics, as well as infectious disease in obstetrics and gynecology, comprehensive women's health care, preventive medicine, and utilization of mid-level practitioners.

He has a private practice in Pittsfield, Maine, which consists entirely of referral patients from primary care providers. Residents accompany Russ to this site, performing colposcopies, endometrial biopsies, as well as assists surgery. Russ also serves as medical director of the Family Planning Association of Maine and the Center of Reproductive Services, an abortion referral and training site founded with the Family Planning Association. The center has developed a group of primary care providers who perform abortions and train other primary care providers to perform abortions; opportunities to train at this site are also open to interested residents.

In addition, Russ presents weekly didactic lectures and case presentations and is the point person for OB rounds. His chairmanship of the Department of OB/GYN at Maine General Hospital provides additional leadership opportunities for the residency. Although not a primary care provider, Dr. DeJong's experience, practice, and mentorship contribute enormously to the residency’s strong training in women's health care.

When not involved with medical tasks, Russ may be found sailing, kayaking or grooming his extensive system of cross country ski trails - always open to the entire residency community, including medical students and employees.
