Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency
Award winning fisherman, thespian extraordinaire, lighting designer and key grip, custodian, photographer, street sweeper, and musician, Osteopathic physician: Oh the many phases of Mark Sutherland. I was born and raised in Independence MO, and spent many steamy summers roaming the Ozark hills in mid-Missouri. It was there I fell in love with nature: hiking, fishing, camping, and swimming. My days were full of freedom and easy living.
Later my path led to a theatrical exposure where I spent four years at Avila University in Kansas City earning a bachelor of Fine Arts. Music and stage performance filled my days along with falling in love with my now wife Nancy. From there I moved on to film and video productions working as a lighting designer and grip for 5 years. Freedom reigned high in those years where I let my hair grow long into a ponytail (more like a sage brush).
My path changed rather dramatically after that. I chose to pursue a degree in medicine and was accepted and attended the Osteopathic institution of Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. In my training years I was accepted into a one year undergraduate fellowship in Osteopathic Principals and Practice. Upon graduation I selected a rotating internship year in Kansas City and subsequently finished out my remaining 2 years at Maine Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency in Augusta ME. Nancy and our three children, as well as I, fell in love with the northeast and Maine in particular. Traveling back to Kansas I held a Family Medicine position at a health clinic in rural Kansas for over 4 years. There I practiced full spectrum Family Medicine and Obstetrics.
Opportunity brought me back to Maine in 2007 where Maine Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency hired me. I currently practice full spectrum Family Medicine at Four Seasons Family Practice in Fairfield. I am, also, the director of the Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Plus One Residency and adjunct faculty at the Maine Dartmouth Collaborative Care Center; a collaborative group of clinicians and therapists treating chronic pain.
