Pronunciation of Dr. Mary Jo Fisher

Mary Jo has lived in almost all corners of the US. She was born in upstate New York, spent her adolescence in southern California, and attended college in Oregon and graduate school in Kansas. After graduating with a B.S. in physics in 1975 and while working towards her master’s degree in physics from University of Kansas in Lawrence, she met her husband Tony. She left academia, moved to the Ozark’s woods, and taught high school math and science for the next ten years. Following a passion for maternal and child health, Mary Jo returned to school to earn her MD at the University of Missouri, in Columbia, Missouri, where she graduated cum laude. After residency and two years in private practice, she was tempted back to her alma mater as a faculty member. She so loved working with residents that she stayed on faculty at Cox FMR in Springfield, Missouri, the last two of her sixteen years as acting program director. Drawn by Maine’s natural beauty and the wonderful collegial environment at MDFMR, she joined Maine-Dartmouth as an associate director in 2011. She served as associate director and the director of education at Maine-Dartmouth from 2013 until 2021. After 30 years and over a thousand deliveries, Mary Jo elected to stop doing obstetrics in 2019 and is now concentrating on outpatient medicine. Teaching and mentoring residents remains a passion and currently she spends much of her time focusing on outpatient education and advocating for resident physician wellness.
