Laura Silver, DO
University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine
Maine Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency
Laura Silver was born and raised in New Hampshire. She attended Vassar College where she sang in an a cappella group and double majored in Biology and Italian. She spent a year in Boston after college working for a non-profit and discovering city life wasn’t quite her cup of tea. When applying to medical schools she learned about osteopathy and realized its values matched hers, especially regarding the practice of osteopathic manipulative treatment. She attended University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford where she discovered the joys of Maine’s endless outdoor activities. She met her husband, Kirk, in Lewiston while she was doing her rotations and he was a resident in family medicine.
After she graduated from medical school, she and Kirk took off for a year, to travel internationally and practice medicine. They spent a large part of their year in Punta Gorda, Belize, where Kirk ran the community health clinic and Laura taught PAs and medical students, ran the pharmacy, worked as the community health liaison and dodged tarantulas that wandered into her office from the jungle. They also hiked the Superior Hiking Trail, helped Kirk’s dad make maple syrup in Canada, and spent two months in India with the Himalayan Health Exchange.
Laura was drawn to MDFMR due to their excellent combination of strong medicine training with a supportive and passionate community. After graduating, Laura stayed on for these same reasons, becoming their first full-spectrum hospitalist. She delights in teaching and inpatient care and is glad to continue to be a part of the MDFMR community.
When not working Laura can usually be found with Kirk, hiking, paddling, walking, swimming, snowshoeing, skiing, or in some way enjoying the beautiful state of Maine. She also enjoys cooking, playing with her dogs Toad and Nell, contra dancing and travel.
