Charlie Perakis, DO

Charlie Perakis, DOHe was born and raised on the north shore of Massachusetts, leaving him with residual accent and attitude. After obtaining a BS degree in Pharmacy at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in Boston and receiving a D.O. degree at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, he completed an internship and FP residency at the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine in Portland. The next twenty years he had his own practice in Limerick Maine, an underserved community. His patients taught him about the practice of medicine. During this time he taught at University of New England University College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) exploring ways of integrating medical humanities into the curriculum. He also co-directed a FP residency at the Osteopathic Hospital of Maine for 15 years.

He completed a Literature and Medicine fellowship at Hiram College in Ohio and obtained a Masters in Education degree at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts. He edited the Journal of Medical Humanities for five years while attending many conferences related to connections between medicine and history, visual arts, poetry, and ethics.

He retired from full time practice in 1995. He spent 4 years creating and teaching an Introduction to Clinical Medicine course at American University of the Caribbean on St. Martin in the Caribbean.

He joined MDFPR in 2004 and has coordinated the University of New England University College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) medical student core rotations for Maine General Hospital. He spends 3 days a week precepting students and residents. He continues to research and place emphasis on the patient-physician relationship, interviewing and the humanities as important resources for improving patient care.

He is married and lives with his wife, LuAnn and a Siamese cat named Bluff. He spends a good deal of time at his island cottage and tracking and observing wildlife. He loves to teach and tries to make the learning environment a stimulating and fun experience.
